The CajaCanarias Foundation is presenting until 11 May the exhibition entitled "Africa-Babel. The art of a continent" in its Cultural Space of Santa Cruz de Tenerife (Plaza del Patriotismo, 1). Admission is free and opening hours are, Monday to Friday from 10:00 to 13:30 hours and 17:30 to 20:00 hours, and on Saturdays, from 10:00 to 13:30 hours.

The exhibition, made up of 368 sculptural pieces, masks, everyday objects and paintings, covers traditional African art, focusing on the peoples of its equatorial and tropical strip, from the Atlantic Ocean to the Indian Ocean. It is almost entirely a private collection of Guillermo Martínez, who has travelled around Africa treasuring these objects and has also documented them in an attempt to preserve their symbolic and sacred value. African sculpture has revolutionised contemporary European art. At the beginning of the 20th century, major exhibitions of primitive and African art were held in Paris, inspiring artists such as Pablo Picasso and Alberto Giacometti, as well as numerous artists from the Surrealist movement. This selection of sculptures is the result of a constant search for sensations and emotions over three decades.
