valleorotava

Overlooked by the peak of nearby Mount Teide, the Orotava Valley descends towards the sea amidst a spectacular landscape of green palm groves, black volcanic soil, and the deep blue of the ocean. The Orotava Valley, also known as the Taoro Valley, a name which the Guanches gave to this region, is a wide depression in the north of the island of Tenerife which has the Teide at its back and the ocean at its feet. It contains three towns – La Orotava, Puerto de la Cruz, and Los Realejos – which share this geological, scenic, and agricultural area.

Average year-round temperatures of 20°C allow visitors to enjoy the peace, quiet and beautiful views of the idyllic black sand beaches of the area such as El Bollullo, La Fajana and La Grimona at any time of year. Moreover, El Socorro Beach also combines its volcanic beauty with the boldness of its seas, meaning it is a true surfer's paradise. While the gentle ocean and its rich marine resources invite visitors to do some sailing or diving, other outdoors activities such as walking, cycling, and horse riding also represent worthwhile leisure options in this area.

The banana industry, currently in recession due to population increases, and wine cultivation have left their unmistakable mark on the landscape of the Orotava Valley, which gives its name to one of the wines with a designation of origin from the island. The wine industry has a long tradition here which stretches back to the conquest. Historical evidence shows that the first vines planted were on the El Burgado estate in los Realejos, and today, their wines are still of outstanding quality.
