Ecobond, invest in the environment

The Council of Tenerife, the Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Shipping of Santa Cruz de Tenerife and CajaCanarias offers companies on the island the possibility of collaborating on forest restoration projects in uninhabited areas in the higher areas of the south of Tenerife by purchasing Ecobonds. In 2009 and 2010, a total of 45 hectares of Canarian pine trees were planted.

The project was set in motion following the signing of a collaboration agreement for environmental projects by the Council of Tenerife and companies on the island.

The so-called Ecobond Project consists of the issuing of environmental bonds for the value of €10, €50, €100, €200, €500 and €1000 which can be purchased either from the Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Shipping of Santa Cruz de Tenerife.

Proceeds from environmental bonds will be used for forest restoration projects in the designated areas to help mitigate the effects of climate change resulting from the negative effects of greenhouse gasses released into the atmosphere.

The program is now seeking to become part of the United Nations for the Environment Program (UNEP) world initiative "The Plant for the Planet: Billion Tree Campaign", aimed at encouraging people and entities around the world (individuals, children and youth groups, schools, community groups, non-governmental organisations, farmers, private sector organisations, local authorities and national governments) to enter a pledge to plant anything from a single tree to several million trees on the Billion Tree Campaign website at: www.unep.org/billiontreecampaign.
