Powers

The first additional provision of Spanish Law 14/1990/26 July on the Legal System of Public Administrations in the Canary Islands, transfers various powers in the islands to the Cabildos (Councils), including:

  • Promotion of culture, sports, activities, leisure and relaxation in the islands.
  • Conservation and administration of the historic/artistic heritage of the islands.
  • Museums, libraries and archives that are not reserved to the Regional Autonomy.

As regards culture, these transfers are specified through Decree 152/1994, and are the following:

  • Subsidies to Local Corporations, private institutions, collectives and natural persons for specific programs of cultural activities.
  • Aid for meeting the running costs, costs of acquisition of assets and infrastructure from of institutions providing cultural services.
  • Awarding of study grants in the fields of music, plastic arts, theatre,dance and other cultural areas.
  • Aid and travel grants for participating in cultural shows.
  • Planning, organizingand management of festivals, conferences, missions and events, seasons, cycles,concerts, stages and other theatre, literary, film, musical, choral andchoreographic shows in the islands.
  • Executionof works on the island included in the Regional Plan for Cultural Infrastructure.
