The Council of Tenerife has presented the first phase of the Island's High Speed Telecommunications Ring, consisting of the installation of basic telecommunications infrastructure for broadband internet connection on the island. The project is to be completed in November this year and will bring new services and opportunities to the island's internet users.
Summary: To coincide with the new year, the environmental education and participation program known as Green Homes extends to the municipalities of Güímar, Los Realejos and Tacoronte. Families participating in the project receive personal guidance and tips on how to incorporate environmental habits into their daily lives and their homes. Those interested should complete the registration form (see adjoined document) and forward it to the Environmental Education Unit of the Council of Tenerife's Office for the Environment.
The Council of Tenerife has launched its Online Training Platform in the Island's Network of Public Internet Access Centres and offers free courses for the general public, especially for those people living in Tenerife who have problems with internet access. Those interested in the courses can obtain further information in the adjoined documents and can register by visiting one of the authorised distance learning centres that form part of Tenerife Network of Public Internet Access Centres.
The Council of Tenerife, via Tenerife's Institute for Renewable Energies (ITER) and the company Petratherm, is currently participating in research on underground resources. Based on the fact that Tenerife is still volcanically active and that the earth produces a substantial amount of heat, the Council of Tenerife hopes to capture this heat and produce geothermal energy with a view to attaining energy self-sufficiency for the island.

Turismo de Tenerife launches an online reservation system developed by the Spanish State Agency for the Management of Tourism Innovation and Technology. With this new application offered through Tenerife's web portal www.webtenerife.com, the island will be the first Spanish destination to offer visitors the possibility of purchasing a wider selection of goods and services online.
The main objectives of the Special Plan for the Regulation of Industrial Activity in Tenerife are to provide necessary guarantees and legal security for land in order to foster the development of industry throughout the whole island; and facilitate the setting up of companies and the diversification of the local economy within the framework established in the Insular Plan of Territorial Regulation (PIOT), whilst at the same time adhere to the island's environmental objectives. The drafting of the plan has been put out to tender by the Council of Tenerife.
The Council of Tenerife's TF Innova program will set in motion two projects as part of the Interreg Mac Program for the promotion of Research and Development (R&D) in Tenerife, with an investment of just over €1.4 million.
The high unemployment rate in Spain, and especially in the Canary Islands, has given rise to a marked increase in entrepreneurial activity in Tenerife. This year, applications to the Council of Tenerife's Office for Economic Development, Business and Employment for advisory services and subsidies have increased by 25 percent. In order to meet the increase in demand for these services, the Council has employed a greater number of local development officers to monitor and help develop viable business plans.
