Introduction

The Livestock Unit, belonging to the Technical Service for Livestock and Fisheries, is entrusted with supporting, maintaining and developing the livestock sector in Tenerife. Several types of infrastructure exist for this purpose, as well as a group of experts specializing in the various livestock sub-sectors who are working towards improving local production, paying particular attention to native breeds, which are one of the Canary Islands marks of identity.

Action scenarios:

The diverse nature of livestock production in Tenerife has forced the Livestock Unit to make considerable efforts to develop specific support programmes for the various livestock sub-sectors. The main lines of work are as follows:

  • Special Development Plan for Livestock Activities in Tenerife.
  • Support programme for artisanal cheeses in Tenerife.
  • Support programme for dairy herd production (Safeval programme).
  • Support programme for Canary Islands bovine breed.
  • Creation of Rabbit Insemination Centre.
  • Conservation and promotion programme for the Canary Islands black pig.
  • Support programme for horse-breeding in Tenerife.

The aim of these present and future lines of work, coupled with ongoing efforts by all livestock breeders in Tenerife, is to consolidate and improve livestock production on the island, thereby ensuring that the sector will be sustainable and economically competitive in the market.
