The Carnival of Santa Cruz de Tenerife takes to the streets on Friday the 17th of February with the Inaugural Procession at 20:00 and will include various events, concerts and dances before it comes to a close on Sunday the 26th.
The City Hall of Santa Cruz de Tenerife has selected the prodigious 1960's with the bachdrop of the "Flower Power" era and the hippy movement as the theme of the 2012 Carnival. This counterculture movement arose during the 1960's in the United States, which was also the period in which many of the first carnival groups were founded and Santa Cruz became the only place in Spain were the Carnival continued to be celebrated as a Winter Fiesta.
