In the past the municipality of Güímar was considered the capital of the region of Valle de Güímar, together with Candelaria and Arafo. After the seventies, however, the municipality remained mostly unaffected by the drastic transformation in land and economy experienced by the island as a result of the growth in tourism. Güímar escaped the perils of uncontrolled development and was in a better position than the tourist areas in the south of the island to retain its fascinating historical, natural and cultural heritage. Its location, halfway between the tourist regions of the south and the metropolitan area, is just another reason why visitors are attracted to Güímar.
