The Museum of Science and the Cosmos of the Council will host on Friday 7, at 19:00 hours, the conference "The first astronomer of the Canary Islands", given by research professor Jorge Sánchez Almeida. It will tell the story of the astronomer Juan Valderrama y Aguilar and his main scientific achievements, which include being the third astronomer in history to observe a solar flare. It's free of charge.

It is about an important astronomer in Santa Cruz in the 19th century, who observed the sky from the roof of his house and who published his results in the magazine of the French astronomical society. He is known for his observation notebooks, which appeared mysteriously in the library of the Institute of Astrophysics of the Canary Islands and because his articles are still cited in the databases used by professional astronomers. Jorge Sánchez Almeida is a Research Professor at the Institute of Astrophysics of the Canary Islands. He holds a degree in Physics from the Complutense University of Madrid and a PhD from the University of La Laguna (1988). He has worked in various fields of astronomy ranging from Cosmology to Solar Physics.
