Residency for European Union citizens

Citizens of EU countries who wish to stay or establish their residence in Spain for over three months are required to apply for a registration certificate or an EU Citizen Family-member Residency Card. This should be presented at the Office for Foreigners in the province of intended stay or residence.

Who is eligible?

  • Spouses of EU citizens, except in cases of de facto or legal separation.
  • Legally registered partners of EU citizens, where the relationship is similar to a marital relationship and is registered with a public registry.
  • Children under the age of 21 of EU citizens, or of their spouses or registered partners, as well as incapacitated or dependent children over the age of 21.
  • Dependent parents or grandparents of EU citizens, or of their spouses or registered partners.

How and where

The registration certificate or the EU Family-member Residence Card should be presented at the Office for Foreigners in the province of intended residence.

The EU Family-member Residence Card is valid for five years.
