A declaration of an Asset of Cultural Interest ensures that the asset will receive the maximum level of protection provided by current legislation. BICs are the most outstanding manifestations of culture on the Archipelago and as such they require very strict rules on protection to ensure their conservation.

Assets that are well-known for their historic, artistic, archaeological, ethnographic or paleontological value or that constitute unique testimonies of the culture of the Canary Islands are declared BICs.

Any asset that has been declared of cultural interest is entered in the Assets of Cultural Interest Registry, including assets that are in the process of being declared a BIC. In this latter case, however, the entry is temporary until the procedure is finalised.

The Registry is managed by the Autonomous Community , and, more specifically, by the General Directorate for Cooperation and Cultural Heritage of the Government of the Canary Islands.
