Municipal Architecture Lists

The Municipal Architecture Lists are governed by Articles 43 to 47 of the Canary Islands Historical Heritage Act and must include any building that has historical, architectural and ethnographic value worth preserving.

However, the Amended Text of the Canary Islands Regional Planning and Nature Areas Acts (TRLOTLENC) extends the listed buildings repertoire to include those that are of artistic, archaeological, paleontological, ecological, scientific or technical interest.

Interventions on listed buildings are authorised by the respective town or city councils, unless they are listed as an Asset of Cultural Interest, in which case they come under the legal framework for BICs. In any event, demolishing a listed building requires permission by the Council of Tenerife and first it must be declared a ruin.

There are three levels of protection for listed buildings, depending on their heritage value and cultural interest. The levels are:

  • Comprehensive.- The entire building is protected, on both the outside and the inside.
  • Environmental.- Only the outside of the building is protected.
  • Partial.- Only specific parts of the building are protected.

You can find further information on the Municipal Architecture Lists by consulting the Protected Assets Lists.
