In case of an earthquake, the Government of the Canary Island's Central Office for Safety and Emergencies, via the Coordinating Centre for Emergencies and Security 112, makes the following recommendations:
- Move away from windows, glass cabinets and any object that can shatter.
- Take cover under a sturdy piece furniture, such as a table, bed, etc.
- Do not use the lift.
- When outside, stay in open areas away from facades, walls, buildings and electrical installations.
- If you are driving, stay in your car. Move away from bridges, utility poles, dilapidated buildings and areas prone to landslides or falling rocks.
- If you are near the coast, head towards the centre of the island immediately.
- Disconnect electricity and turn of water and gas mains. Get out of the building as soon as possible.
- Avoid going to affected areas as this hampers rescue efforts.
