coronavirusHomeI On the 14th of March 2020, the President of the Island Council of Tenerife, Pedro Martín, established exceptional measures in order to not only contain the spread of the coronavirus Covid - 19, but also to avoid overloading the health services. In addition, he highlighted the coordination with the Canary Islands Government in the decisions being taken and added that he is in contact with the rest of the island councils to coordinate, as far as possible, measures to be launched. The following measures have been taken:

The Cabildo de Tenerife has kept its offices attending to citizens open for prearranged appointments over the phone 922 239 500 and emails atencioncabildo@tenerife.es. The procedures that may be carried out will only be attempts to obtain the electronic certificate and permanent key (username and password). The offices that will be open from Monday 4th May are listed below with their schedules: Santa Cruz de Tenerife (09:00 to 18:00), La Laguna, La Orotava and Los Cristianos (09:00 to 14:00). You can also carry out processes through the Electronic Headquarters.
The activities of the occupational centres, elderly daytime centres, psychosocial rehabilitation daytime centres, daytime centres for people with learning difficulties and the Service for the Promotion of Personal Autonomy have been suspended.
Operation of the Tenerife Cable Car and the Altavista Refuge have been suspended.
The island museums that depend on the Autonomous Organisation of Museums and Centres of the Island Council of Tenerife are closed, as well as the TEA Tenerife Arts Space, and all programmed activities are suspended or postponed. Puerto de la Cruz’s Casa de la Aduana, Empresa Insular de Artesanía shops, cultural centres, visitor centres and similar buildings have closed.
The Island Trail Network has been closed and all activities within the Teide National Park have been suspended.
All organised group visits under the island’s responsibility have been suspended, regardless of their nature (cultural, sporting, recreational, touristic, etc.).
The ordinary system of use for the forests and natural spaces add the following prohibitions and recommendations:
- The cultural use of fire (agricultural, forest or controlled fires of weeds, bushes, grasses, waste and others) is prohibited. - Recreational fire use (barbecues, bonfires, campfires, gas stoves, among others) is prohibited.
- The use of machinery or tools that can create sparks or glowing elements, such as weed wackers with a blade, welding equipment or radial saws and others, is prohibited.
- Pyrotechnic displays, firework boxes, rockets, firecrackers, flares and any other pyrotechnic material in the area of risk are prohibited.
- It is recommended that caution be taken throughout the island territory with any activity that can create fires (tobacco, use of generators, electrical equipment and fireworks, among others).
- It is not advisable to go through Tenerife’s forest areas.
To recommend that the municipalities take the necessary measures to limit access to funeral homes, with the exception of the presence of those closest to the deceased.
To recommend that municipalities close the beaches to avoid large crowds of people.

On the other hand, the exceptional measures laid down on Thursday, March 12, 2004, establishing the suspension or postponement of all sports, cultural, educational or training gatherings organised by the Island Council and carried out in both indoor and outdoor spaces, are maintained.

The Island Games, the Youth Sports Programme and the Island Adapted Sport Programme managed by the Island Council remain suspended. All face-to-face training activities, organised by any of the entities that make up the island’s public sector, are also cancelled.

The closure of recreational and camping areas dependent on the Island Council, camps, as well as the Tenerife, Santa Cruz-Ofra sports complex has been ordered, and all activities scheduled to take place in the Tenerife Sports Pavilion Santiago Martin and the Tenerife International Centre for Trade Fairs and Congresses have been suspended.

Measures have been taken to protect the high-risk population, as there are around 6,000 residential and daycare places on Tenerife within its network of social policies, which house elderly people or people in a situation of dependency.

In relation to these people, the directions established by the Canary Islands government, suspending visits to people who are registered in centres linked with the Institute of Social and Health Care (IASS) are being followed, and clubs and leisure centres for the elderly have been shut. The activity of day centres that share a space with residential centres have been suspended, in order to avoid the transit of people on the premises.

In terms of essential public services, preventive measures and protocols have been implemented to minimise the possibility of infection among staff providing this type of service, such as firefighters, forest fire brigades, road workers and workers maintaining the facilities that manage the island’s water, among others. In addition to suspending all activities of an informative nature, such as school visits, work shifts have been reorganised. Persons other than staff have been prohibited from entering facilities and the workplaces have been made safe with the use of certain cleaning products, with the facilities also having been disinfected.

Buses and trams

The Tenerife Island Council, in conjunction with Metrotenerife and Titsa, has been changing the schedule of buses and trams to adjust frequencies and schedules to the current state of emergency. Following limitations on passenger load and frequency of transport decreed by the state of alarm, Titsa and the tram will increase the frequency of transport and number of passengers permitted from Monday 11th May, as part of Phase 1 of the process of de-escalation. On 11 May, the period of free transport will end and cash payments will not be permitted. The maximum occupancy on both types of transport will be around a 50% of the total capacity of each vehicle, ensuring safe distances are kept, and the use of masks will be obligatory.

Titsa will increase the frequency of its transport to 80% of its usual service. The company also reports that it will not accept cash payments but only payments through Ten+ in both its card and mobile format. Passengers must have enough credit for the trip, as no cash payments of any kind will be accepted. Passengers will only be able to access buses via the rear door and will be able to pay using the machine located by the door.

Both tram lines will begin their daily service at 06:00. For Line 1, the frequency of trams will increase to 6 minutes between 07:00 and 15:00. The frequency will be 7 minutes between 15:00 and 20:00, 7.5 minutes between 20:00 and 21:00 and then every 15 minutes until the service ends at 12 at night. For its part, Line 2 will operate every 12 minutes from 07:00 to 15:00 hours, and every 15 minutes the rest of the day.

Restarting commercial activity

Meanwhile, local and retail establishments will remain open to the public, as covered by each stage of the process of "de-escalating" the state of alarm. Provision 4793 of the Official State Gazette (BOE) number 123 of 2020 establishes guidelines for businesses in each phases of the "de-escalation” process.

Regarding the employees of the Island Council and its subsidiaries, the President explained that a protocol has been created with information relating to the prevention and guidelines established by the health authorities in the face of Covid-19, as well as an administrative resolution for the organisation of the staff.
