The rise of hiking, both among the insular population as well as among the tourists who visit us, has motivated the public administrations to become involved in the recovery and conditioning of trails, in order to have an offer of trails that are the basis, not only for the enjoyment of the natural environment and knowledge of protected natural areas, but also to show other areas and resources of the Island.

Bearing in mind that the trails have social, economic, environmental, cultural, educational and sport functions implied by this practice of enjoyment of nature, between 2017 and 2018 the Council of Tenerife developed the Island Trail Strategy (ZIP - 17,2 MB), approved by the Island Governing Council Agreement dated 19 December 2018.

This document is considered to be widely consensual and participative as a draft was prepared and sent to various areas of the Council, to all town councils, federations and other social entities involved and was available on the Hey Participa! citizen platform, so that all of them could make contributions. It consists of two volumes, one referred to diagnosis, and a second called "Actions", which reflect the 31 basic tasks that are considered necessary to implement a coherent and consistent island network in image and quality.

Also, with the same purpose, it was agreed that one of the important issues for moving forward together in the same direction was to establish common mandatory characteristics for all trails.

Finally on 2 April 2019, the Island Governing Council approved the Criteria and Guide for Homologation of the Tenerife Trail Network (PDF - 2,38 MB), a document that sets out the requirements and procedures for coordinated action by all the administrations involved in the Tenerife Trail Network, and within the framework of Decree 11/2005, of 15 February, the Canary Islands Trail Network is created and the conditions for the organisation, standardisation and conservation of trails in the Autonomous Canary Island Community are regulated.
