If you are caught in a sea storm, the Government of the Canary Island's Central Office for Safety and Emergencies, via the Coordinating Centre for Emergencies and Security 112, makes the following recommendations:
- Avoid swimming on remote or unpatrolled beaches you are not familiar with.
- Do not swim on beaches with a red flag or where there are large waves or strong undertows.
- If you see other people in unsafe places, alert them of the danger.
- Stay away from areas where waves are likely to break (rocks, jetties and piers), and don't go near the shore if the sea suddenly turns calm.
- If you fall in the water, try to get away from where the waves break. Signal for help and wait to be rescued.
- If you are swept away by the waves, relax; don't swim against the current, coastal currents lose strength over distance.
