The TEA Tenerife Arts Space will screen the medium-length animated film ‘Cuentos de Bajada’ by Rubén Armiche, an artist from El Hierro, next Thursday, 4 January, at 8.00 p.m. The Cabildo’s contemporary arts centre will hold a free screening of the film, which combines tradition, modernity and technology. Before the screening, at 6.00 p.m., the film’s director will give a talk on animation. In ‘Cuentos de Bajada’, Rubén Armiche shows the Descent of the Virgin of El Hierro from his unique point of view, as well as different aspects of this tradition and the elements involved in it in a fun and educational way.

‘Cuentos de Bajada’ is a film aimed at young viewers and, fittingly, some children took part and collaborated in its production by voicing some of the characters like Pancho the Grouper and La Sabina. The entire work is based on the principles of limited animation, a technique used in Eastern Europe: using very few resources, the editing stage allows the film a certain dynamism and leads to an overall artistic work. These short-length films make use of watercolour, pastel and oil painting, charcoal drawing and software.

For more than twenty years, Rubén Armiche has worked in all different fields of the plastic arts: painting, sculpture, design, illustration, teaching, animation and web design. A graduate of Fine Arts at the University of La Laguna, Armiche also holds a master in Microsoft Animation and 3D from the AZPE Computer Academy in Madrid. He studied drawing in movement and animation with Carmen Reyes Duque and has worked for more than thirteen years as an illustrator at the Canary Islands Popular Culture Centre with Canarian writers of all styles including Emilio González Déniz, María Padrón, Pepa Aurora, Francisco Tarajano Pérez, Lorenzo Doreste and Isabel Medina.

He has also published three comic books about legends from the Canary Islands and traditions and historical events from Castile-La Mancha. In the audiovisual field, he has worked for Sal Producciones as a storyboard producer on the TV series ‘Tinguaro’ and has also done some experimental work with stop motion and flash with works like ‘Instante’ (Instant) and ‘Casi Blanco’ (Almost White). In 2013, he made the 2D-animation short film ‘Codicia’ (Greed), followed by ‘An”s”uelo’ (Bait), an animated film made with charcoal. ‘El Extraño Caso’ (The Strange Case) is another of his works.
