Teide, World Heritage

The majestic Teide mountain, Europe's highest volcanic cone, Spain's highest mountain, has inspired and marvelled all visitors to Tenerife throughout history. Rising 3718 metres above sea level, Teide has made Tenerife, throughout time, a point of reference in the Atlantic Ocean. The outstanding beauty of the mountain has made it an object of numerous literary references. Declared a National Park in 1952, the area features the beautiful Teide violet amongst its 139 species of flora, a third of which are native to the Canary Islands. The rich vegetation, including the iconic towers of jewels, as well as the fauna, geology and landscape earned the park a place on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2007.
