Gathering of information on hunting efforts and captures

Hunting and game data collection

  • This is a major contribution hunters make towards game management.
  • It is a simple and reliable way to monitor game populations continuously.
  • The method enables useful and valuable records to be kept of the unrepeatable biological material extracted by hunters every year.

What for

  • So that reliable annual information on the natural abundance and productivity of game species is available to the hunters concerned and the Administration. The information is accumulative and becomes increasing valuable as a management tool as the years go by.
  • To apply coherent planning to the exploitation of game species that will help dwindling game populations to recover, a situation pursued by hunters and the Administration.
  • To monitor results to determine the usefulness of current management methods and to identify the best areas for recovering and releasing game species.
  • To identify environmental factors that can contribute towards positive trends in game populations as well as the negative factors, and to remedy the latter.

Who it is aimed at

This information, collected voluntarily by hunters concerned about rational hunting, is processed by Tenerife's Game Species Monitoring System.

The results will be published and made available to participating individuals and associations.

How you can take part

The Monitoring System is possible thanks to the voluntary cooperation of hunters who are prepared to monitor the effort they made and the results they obtained at the end of each day of hunting.

The Environment Department and participant hunters associations distribute hunting logs with tables of game species that are easy to complete for monitoring purposes.

Special envelopes for each species are also distributed to hunters so they can collect samples and send them to the Council. The samples are subsequently analysed for statistical purposes. You can request the envelopes from hunters associations following their instructions or at the Council's Hunting Offices.

Information on Barbary pigeon banding is very important for annual restocking purposes, so please report the band number and when you hunted the bird.

The first three days of small game hunting is the best time to collect reliable data on the natural productivity of game species populations. That is why control areas are set up in several locations where expert staff collect on-the-spot game data that requires the cooperation expected from hunters.

If you have decided to participate in the Game Species Monitoring System for small game, please go to the Environmental Department of the Council of Tenerife or one of the partner associations to pick up your hunting log, sample envelopes and the easy to understand monitoring instructions. Your cooperation can be anonymous and unrelated to the administration, if you prefer.

The data must be delivered annually, before the 31st of December, to the Council of Tenerife's Sustainability Department or to one of the island's hunters associations, who will send it to the Environment Agency. (See contact details).
