Interactive guide to plant species

The new digital User's Guide to Plant Species of Tenerife allows users to obtain information on the principal plant species found on the island. The guide includes a description of the plant, the family it belongs to, the type of plant it is, its habitat, how it is grown, what it needs to survive, and other information.

The various parameters and up-to-date location maps allow users to quickly and easily find information. The guide is also an extremely useful tool for amateur and professional gardeners as it provides information on the needs of each species.

Contents

General basic information is divided into the following sections

  • Environmental Regions: The island's 11 Environmental Regions are established in the island's Land Planning Rules (PIOT), with some modifications to accommodate biological criteria.
  • Infrastructure, Towns and Roads: This section provides information on the island's towns and their surroundings, the island's network of roads, as well as infrastructure where plants may be used for ornamentation or in rehabilitation and restoration work.
  • Potential Vegetation: Previously unpublished information was used to produce a detailed map of the island's potential vegetation. This section was made possible thanks to the Department of Plant Biology (Botany) of the University of La Laguna, the department responsible for designing "Cartografía de la Vegetación Canaria" (Cartography of Canarian Vegetation) for Cartográfica Canaria, S.A. (GRAFCAN) .
  • Bioclimatic Belts: This section provides data on plants typical of the area, as well as the environmental needs of native plants. Information is useful for the growing of exotic species.
  • Sectoral Problems: This section includes information on the effects of failing to comply with rules on gardening and environmental rehabilitation following construction works in general.
  • Basic regulation: In this section you can access the laws concerning the application of this Guide.

Catalogue of Species

This catalogue features a list of 165 accredited species (100 native and 65 exotic), which can be used either in gardening or rehabilitation efforts following construction work. It includes the following sections:

  • Systematic Classification: 165 species divided into Division, Class, Family and Genus.
  • Classification by Biotype: In addition to systematic classification, this practical Guide organises information by native and non-native species, tree biotypes, large shrubs, small shrubs, succulent or fat plants, climbing plants, ground cover and bulbous plants.
  • Regional Distribution: Species listed by natural location and recommendations for best areas or environmental regions to grow plants.

Descriptive Records

These records provide a brief botanical description of the species and biological characteristics, environmental needs and practical information. Information is only available for the most typical species.
