Finca El Helecho is located in Caserío de El Bueno in the muncipality of Arico.
It is home to Tenerife's largest reserve of Canarian black pig, and has a vast selection of Canarian native breeds of livestock, including both northern and southern breeds of Tenerife goat, Canarian sheep, hair sheep, Canarian cows and chickens, Moorish donkeys and Canarian black bees.
The estate organises school visits, in cooperation with the Tenerife Rural Foundation. The aim of these visits is to disseminate knowledge about livestock farming and traditional Canarian agriculture through engaging exhibitions and workshops such as artisan cheesemaking, artisan gofio making, amongst others.
The Nature Classroom consists of a group of cave houses and accommodation for groups and organisations involved in promoting rural life and environmental workshops. The Nature Classroom is located on the highest part of the estate and offers superb views of the surrounding area.

This Rabbit Insemination Centre was founded to produce high quality semen and to offer artificial insemination services to all of the island's rabbit farmers. The centre is located in Finca Data del Coronado, in the municipality of El Rosario, and is the first of its kind in the Canary Islands. It was opened on the 16th of October 2007 and is run by the Council of Tenerife's Technical Service for Livestock and Fishing.
The facility currently has 1000 Hyplus rabbits selected in France for their superior genetic qualities. Semen is collected from these bucks and used by farmers for their rabbits.
To guarantee the quality of the semen, the bucks are housed in special rooms with temperature control systems to ensure optimal moisture and ventilation.
Once the semen is collected, it is treated in a laboratory equipped with reproductive technology and samples of semen are prepared in under the best conditions.
The facilities and specialised staff comply with strict health and biosecurity standards which ensure that semen production, both within and outside the centre, is of the highest quality.
Artificial insemination
Artificial insemination is central to rabbit farming as it allows farmers to manage reproduction in an organised and profitable manner.
Advantages of artificial insemination in rabbits.
- Improves health management on farms by reducing health risks through avoiding physical contact between male and female rabbits, thereby reducing the transmission of diseases.
- Increases the number of reproduction places, thereby increasing production with the same number of cages. Saves on upkeep of bucks.
- Rapidly improves genetics with results that meet market demands.
- Synchronises farm activities by enabling different forms of management.
- A rabbit farmer that makes use of artificial insemination can manage 600 does every day.
This centre enables the island's rabbit farmers to obtain fresh samples of semen, avoiding previously problematic issues such as transportation from the mainland. Rabbit farmers interested in artificial insemination can place an order with the Insemination Centre. Staff from the Insemination Centre will then arrange a time to conduct the insemination procedure as from December.

The Special Spatial Plan for the Regulation of Livestock Farming in Tenerife (PTEOAG) is a document which establishes rules for the livestock farming sector on the island of Tenerife. The document was drafted within the framework of the land regulations set out in the Insular Plan for Spatial Planning (PIOT).
PTEOAG comprises the following documents:
- Livestock Farming Report.- This report provides and in-depth analysis of livestock farming in Tenerife. It includes informative maps with all the visual documentation used to draft the regulations for the sector.
- Regulatory Report.- This report includes information on the different regulations discussed and the regulatory model finally adopted. It includes action plans to work towards the general objectives set forth in the Special Spatial Plan. These spatial plans provide a visual representation of the proposed regulatory model.
- Environmental Study.- An environmental diagnosis and a study based on the proposed regulatory model. It also contains proposals for protective and/or corrective measures included within the regulatory document.
- Rules.- This document outlines the legal aspects of the Special Spatial Plan, including the different territorial and sectorial provisions for farming in Tenerife.

The Casa del Ganadero (Livestock Farmers House) is an old restored twentieth century house situated on Camino de San Diego, in the heart of the La Laguna plains, on a 25,933 square-metre estate. The building was acquired by the Council of Tenerife in 1966 and since then has been used to hold cattle pulls. The harnesses used during the fairs can be seen on the outside of the building. A variety of farming and agricultural events continue to be held in the building and on the grounds of the estate.
The Casa del Ganadero was established to promote knowledge of agriculture and livestock farming amongst residents. It is also a meeting point for the island's farmers.
Activities for residents
- School visits.- The estate has been hosting activities, workshops and tours for school children since 2010. Places are limited and to register, please visit The Tenerife Rural Foundation.
- Exhibition of native breeds.- There is an area for animals where visitors can view native Canarian livestock such as the pelibuey sheep, Tenerife Norte goats and Canarian black pigs.
- Training Room.- The estate has a hall for courses, conferences and meetings with seating for 50 people which is available to groups involved in the promotion of rural and fishing life.
- Sports.- The estate has an athletics track and gym equipment for all those who love outdoor sports. Admission is free (consult opening times).

The Council of Tenerife's Organic Unit for Livestock, which belongs to the Technical Service for Livestock and Fishing, works to support, preserve and develop the island's livestock sector.
It does so by means of a variety of different infrastructures and a team of experts specialised in the different livestock subsectors who work to improve local production, especially in the case of native breeds.
Due to the diversity of livestock production on the island, the Council of Tenerife has had to pay special attention to developing specific programs to support the diverse livestock subsectors on the island.
