Cueva del Viento

The underground cave complex known as the Cueva del Viento (“Cave of the Wind”) is the largest lava tube in the European Union. The cave is open to the public and visiting it is a unique and informative experience.

The cave was formed by the lava flows expelled by the Pico Viejo (“Old Peak”) volcano, which is situated next to Mount Teide. The cave is more than 17 kilometres long and includes three different levels of passageways, in addition to spectacular geomorphological phenomena such as lava pits, terraces and other lava formations

A visit to the Cueva del Viento helps visitors understand the role of lava flows in volcanic activity and allows them to see at first hand the extraordinary shapes formed by lava inside the Earth. It is an outstanding example of geological complexity.
