The plan and its objectives

Tenerife's I Plan for Equal Opportunities is an initiative promoted by the Council of Tenerifeto foster gender equality in Tenerife. Initiatives that form part of the plan include activities and talks at Gender and Health conferences.

Services offered

  • Collaboration and coordination of gender policies.
  • Adaptation of Public Services to ensure equal opportunities for men and women.
  • Reduction of obstacles to employment for women.
  • Reconciliation of personal, work and family life.
  • Fomentar el conocimiento y la sensibilización en materia de igualdad.
  • Promotion of culture, sport and equal opportunities.
  • Improvement of the quality of life of women.
  • Promotion of women's participation and representation.
  • Prevention and eradication of gender violence.

Activities envisaged as part of the Equal Opportunities Plan include conferences, discussions and seasons of talks.

Principles of the activities

  • Participation and proximity as a guarantee that knowledge of inequality in Tenerife has been managed with open-mindedness and an inclusive spirit but equally with detail and precision.
  • Institutional Cooperation in the understanding that fundamental advances in the sphere of women in Tenerife will only be achieved by concerted effort.
  • Coordination in order to ensure combined efforts are effective and efficient.
  • Complementarity of initiatives so broader problems can be promptly tackled. Research as a means of recognising and acknowledging the situation of women, thereby providing the basis for future action.
  • Acknowledging the insular nature of Tenerife and understanding that local and geographic particularities must be taken into account when looking at problems related to inequality between women and men in Tenerife.
  • Collective efforts and campaigns to raise awareness of inequality to remove stereotypes that restrict people's freedom to live to the full and exercise their universal rights.
  • Permanent evaluation of all of the Council of Tenerife's achievements in this area so as to continue to implement and enforce sound public policies.
