Work permits

Foreigners who wish to work as an employee or be self-employed in Spain must apply for a work permit.

Foreigners who are already legal residents in Spain or who are on a study or research visa must amend their visa arrangement.

Foreigners who have been granted a residency and work permit and are not yet residing in Spain may contact the Diplomatic Mission or Consular Office in their home country for a visa to live and work in Spain.

Validity

If you would like to work as an employee:

  • The first work permit is valid for one year and it is the employer or employer's representative who is responsible for applying for the permit. The permit is limited to a geographical area and profession.
  • The renewal is valid for two years. Renewals can be applied for after the first permit or first renewal. This permit is not limited to any geographical area or profession. It is the employee who is responsible for applying for this permit. Permits can only be renewed when the initial contract is renewed or if the employee has a contract with another employer.

If you would like to be self-employed in Spain:

  • The first permit is valid for one year.
  • The renewal is valid for two years. Renewals can be applied for after the first permit or first renewal. You must show evidence that your activity has not ceased and that you have no outstanding tax and social security payments.
